Andrew J. Smail, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, surrounded by his family and his special caretaker and earthly angel, Maddie McGill. He was two and a half years apart from his beloved wife, Regina, reunited with her and beloved daughter, Donna, for eternity. Andrew "BoBo" was a devout Roman Catholic and attended daily Mass with his Regina every day when they were able, and he attended and watched Mass and prayed the Rosary every day after Regina's passing. He was a greeter and an usher for every 5 p.m. Saturday Mass at St. Florian Church in United. Andrew was enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and spent time in the military deployed in Germany. He also was a lifetime member of the Hecla Slovak Sportsman Club and loved watching and rooting for the Steelers, Pirates, and especially the Penguins. His Sundays were filled with love and joy when his great-grandchildren visited. Andrew was born June 18, 1933, in Hecla, the son of the late Andrew and Mary Smail. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Donna, in October 1999; his wife, Regina (Nemeth) Smail, in February 2019; his sister, Dorothy Smail; brother, Thomas Smail; and brother, Paul Smail. He is survived by sister, Elizabeth Lessick; sister, Katherine Opalinski; four children, Deborah (Tim) Goswick, of Greensburg, Diane (Michael) Wadsworth, of Norvelt, David (Denise) Smail, of Greensburg, and Denise (Wayne) McGill, of Greensburg; four grandchildren, Lindsay Liprando, Greg Liprando (Ashley), Andy Liprando (Teea) and Ashley Caldwell; and three great-grandchildren, Shiloh, Laurel and Stella Liprando. Family and friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday in the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, Norvelt. Per Andrew's wishes, the family respectfully requests masks be worn while inside the funeral home and church. Social distancing must be maintained. Transfer prayers will be at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home, followed by his funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Florian Church, with the Rev. John A. Sedlak as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Florian Cemetery, Trauger. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to all doctors, nurses, therapists and medical personnel who interacted with Dad, especially those who cared for him from Excela Home Hospice. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Andrew's memory may be made to St. Florian Parish, United, Excela Home Hospice, Latrobe, or any animal shelter of your choosing.
