Elizabeth, “Betty” (Sofranko) Tirdil, 93 of Norvelt passed away Thursday January 18 2018 at home surrounded by her family. Born March 5, 1924 in Morewood, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Theresa (Berdak) Sofranko. She was a member of St. Florian Catholic Church of United and of its Altar Society. Along with her immediate family she was one of the original residents of Norvelt. She enjoyed bowling especially in the HI-LO’s League. She loved playing cards, Scrabble, and Up-Words with family and friends and participated in a “Fun and Games” Wednesday for over 50 years. During days past, she followed her sons around to their many activities and sporting events. She was well known for her baking and cooking of ethnic foods especially pagac. Many friends and relatives learned their pagac-making skills in Betty’s kitchen. She made sure that everyone who entered her home were always treated like family. She was a wonderful and dedicated caregiver to her handicapped son, a mother that anyone would be blessed to have. The exploits of her grandchildren always delighted her. She worked for many years at Montgomery Wards in Greengate Mall. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by Joseph J Tirdil, her husband of 58 years, sisters; Margaret Pavick and Helen Kapura and Brother John Sofranko. She is survived by sons; Alan and his wife Angela of New Freedom, Lawrence, Joseph M, and “Petey” all of Norvelt, grandchildren; Allison Shinwari and her husband Samim, Alex Tirdil and his wife Sherry, sisters; Valeria Wolk and Dorothy Vidakovich, sister in law Margaret Magda, and family friend Patti Cook. Family and friends will be received at the Jay A. Hoffer Funeral Home, Norvelt Sunday January 21 2018 from 4-8pm. Vigil prayers will be 7:45pm Sunday in the funeral home. Transfer prayers will be held at the funeral home Monday January 22 at 10:15am followed by her funeral mass to be celebrated at St. Florian Catholic Church at 11am with the Reverend John Sedlak as celebrant.
