Evelyn M. Stairs

Evelyn Marie (Crouse) Stairs, 90, of Norvelt, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2015. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was born April 3, 1925, in Scottdale, a daughter of the late Frank and Stella (Halterman) Crouse. She was a 1943 graduate of East Huntingdon High School. Her years of employment included: Robertshaw (during World War II), A and P Food Store and Norvelt Laundromat. She was a member of the Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem No. 18 and Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in New Stanton. She enjoyed baking for her family, working on crossword puzzles, playing scrabble, watching Jeopardy at 7 p.m., jigsaw puzzles, playing bingo, drinking coffee and always rooting for the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates. On Jan. 24, 1946, she married George Stairs, who preceded her in death Aug. 27, 2014. In addition to her parents and husband, the following preceded her in death: sisters, Edna (Crouse) Daily and Nancy (Crouse) Baldwin; brother, James Crouse; brother-in-law, George Daily; and son-in-law, Harry Prue. Surviving are daughters, Virginia A. Prue and Connie R. (Dennis) Baluh, both of Norvelt, Lori L. (Dave) Ball, of North Huntingdon; and son, G. Roger (Gail) Stairs, of Florida; 10 grandchildren, Randy, Scott and Brook Prue, Jeremy, Brandon and Bethany (Black) Baluh, Nathan, Jenna (Stairs) Simmons and Summer (Stairs) Clark and Joshua Ball; and 10 great-grandchildren, Shelby, Savannah, Jacob, Edina and Danica Prue, Brianna and Brynlee Baluh, Grace and Josie Black and Jax Simmons. Also surviving is sister-in-law, Joanne Crouse; and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME, 2245 Mt. Pleasant Road, Norvelt, PA 15674, where funeral service will immediately follow.
