Thomas Edward Smail, 81, of Hecla, passed away peacefully Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023. He was born in Hecla on Mar. 7, 1942, the son of the late George and Anna Babik Smail, and nephew of the late Joseph C. Smail. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, George Smail, his sister, Louise H. Hoadwonic, niece, Pamela Hoadwonic, and a nephew, James Tomich. He was a former steelworker, farmer, and laborer. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a life member of the Hecla Volunteer Fire Department, and a life member of the Sportsmen Club of Hecla. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary (Hirak) Smail of Hecla, and his son, Thomas Joseph (T.J.) Smail of Hecla and Somerset. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Samuel Smail of Hecla and sister, Anna Marie Tomich of Norvelt along with many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Westmoreland Hospital and Father Jeff Wylie, Rector of Christ’s Church. Per Tom’s wishes there shall be no public viewing.
