Walter "Happy" John Furwa, 93, of Hecla, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2015. Born January 12, 1922 in Hecla, he was a son of the late Phillip and Frances (Valcovich) Furwa. "Happy" was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army during the Pacific Theatre. Prior to retirement, Walter was employed as a Leadman for Latrobe Steel. He was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Byzantine Church, Trauger, where he sang for Mass. "Happy" was a member of Hecla VFD, Hecla Sportsmen's Assoc., Mount Pleasant VFW, Elks, Assunta Club, Polish Falcons, Kosciuszko Club, and was an avid golfer and bowler. Walter also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Eleanor June Furwa in 2001, eldest son Daniel in 2012, and siblings: Joseph, Stephen, Mary, Sophie and Julie. Walter is survived by his loving children, Debbie (Ron) Truswell of Pleasant Unity, David (Susan) Furwa of Pittsburgh, John (Jacqueline) Furwa of Latrobe; Grandchildren, Lynne, Angela, Ron, Nikki, Daniel, Courtney, Connor; Great grandchildren, Madelane, Grace, Ben, Lillian, Mikaela; sisters Irene Crimboli of Greensburg, and Genevieve Warzinski of Glen Burnie, MD, plus nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Friday in the JAY A. HOFFER FUNERAL HOME 2245 MT. PLEASANT RD., NORVELT, 15674. His Divine Liturgy will be 10 AM Saturday in St. Mary's Byzantine church, Trauger with Rev. Paul Alexander Schutt, OSB, celebrant. Interment to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Trauger. A Parastas service will be 7:00 PM Friday in the funeral home. The Panachida service will be 9:15 AM Saturday in the funeral home. Military Honors will be accorded 9 AM in the funeral home by the American Legion Post 446, Mt. Pleasant.
