Founder
Jay A. Hoffer, F.D.
1922 - 1992
Our Funeral Home originally began as a farmhouse on the Fisher Farm, built in 1905.
It was later sold to the United States Government and transformed into the administration building for the Westmoreland Homestead Development, part of Roosevelt's "New Deal."
After serving in WWII, Jay Sr. used his GI Bill to attend and complete mortuary school, becoming a funeral director in 1951. In 1952, Jay decided to open a Funeral Home in his hometown of Norvelt.
After considering several locations, the old Fisher farmhouse was purchased from Carl Howell, and is the current location of the business.
By 1962, remodeling and addition projects were completed.
Jay's daughter, Sandra L. Hoffer, earned her funeral director's license in 1983 and worked with her father until his death in 1992.
Jay's son, Jay Jr., was a licensed funeral director with the business from 1971 until 2014.
Over the years, many other family members have worked in and around the business.
In December 2023, the business was sold to Ryan T. Wilt, a second-generation funeral director who earned his license in 2013. Ryan and his family now own and operate the business under the name of Hoffer Wilt Funeral Home.
